Why Convert HEIC to AVIF?

Converting from HEIC to AVIF is useful when you need smaller file sizes and Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+ support. HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) files can be converted to AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) instantly using our browser-based converter — no uploads needed, completely free.

HEIC vs AVIF: File Size Comparison

Based on a typical 12-megapixel photograph (4000 × 3000 pixels) at default quality settings.

AVIF and HEIC both use modern compression. AVIF can sometimes achieve slightly better ratios while maintaining quality.

HEIC to AVIF on Every Platform

iPhone / iPad

Your iPhone saves photos as HEIC by default since iOS 11. To convert to AVIF, simply upload your photos to PhotoFormatLab — no app installation needed. Alternatively, you can change your camera settings to capture in JPG: go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.

Windows PC

Windows 10/11 can display HEIC files if you install the "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store (free). However, most Windows applications still cannot edit HEIC files — converting to AVIF gives you full compatibility with Photoshop, Paint, GIMP, and every other Windows application.

Android

Android devices cannot natively open HEIC files sent from iPhones. Converting to AVIF before sharing ensures Android users can view your photos in any gallery app without installing additional software.

Batch Conversion

PhotoFormatLab processes all files in your browser using Web Workers for parallel conversion. You can convert hundreds of HEIC files to AVIF simultaneously — the speed depends on your device's CPU, not your internet connection.

Common Issues and Solutions

My HEIC file shows as corrupted or will not load

Some HEIC files from older iOS versions use a slightly different encoding. Try updating your iPhone to the latest iOS, or re-export the photo from iCloud.com in its original format before converting.

The converted AVIF file looks slightly blurry or has artifacts

AVIF uses lossy compression. Try increasing the quality slider to 95% or higher. At quality 90%+, the difference from the original is virtually imperceptible for most images.

Conversion is very slow on my device

Large files (over 20 MB) require significant CPU processing since conversion happens entirely in your browser. Close other browser tabs to free up memory, or try converting fewer files at a time. On mobile devices, the process is naturally slower than on desktop computers.

The output file is much larger than expected

This typically happens when converting from a highly compressed format (like HEIC) to a less compressed one (like AVIF). The output reflects the actual image data, not the compression efficiency of the source. Try lowering the quality setting to reduce file size.

Frequently Asked Questions

AVIF is supported by Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge. Safari added AVIF support in version 16.4 (March 2023). For maximum compatibility, use the HTML <picture> element to serve AVIF with a JPG or WebP fallback for older browsers.

For a typical 12-megapixel photograph (4000×3000 pixels), a HEIC file of approximately 2.5 MB converts to a AVIF file of approximately 2.3 MB — a change of -8% (slightly smaller). AVIF and HEIC both use modern compression. AVIF can sometimes achieve slightly better ratios while maintaining quality.

For most purposes, 85-90% quality provides an excellent balance between file size and visual quality. Use 95%+ for photographs where quality is critical (portfolios, print). Use 70-80% for web thumbnails or previews where smaller size matters more. Our converter defaults to 90%.

No. PhotoFormatLab converts files entirely in your browser using JavaScript, Canvas API, and WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device — no upload, no server processing, no cloud storage. This makes the conversion completely private and works even without an internet connection after the page loads.

There is no artificial limit. You can convert hundreds of files in a single batch. The practical limit depends on your device's available memory and CPU speed. For very large batches (500+ files), we recommend processing in groups of 50-100 for optimal performance.

Most individual files convert in under 2 seconds on a modern device. A batch of 50 files typically completes in 30-60 seconds. Since processing happens on your device, conversion speed depends on your hardware — desktop computers are generally faster than phones. There is no upload or download wait time.
